| Yes , it's true , I DO love all things music.
I grew up listening to all types of music , and remember waiting with anticipation every Sunday to hear the chart rundown.
I play guitar , sing and try to write songs ...but my main strength would be my vocal talents ( well , they were ). Many years ago I played & sang lead vocals in bands, but nowadays I'm reduced to strumming along to songs I enjoy or occasionally coming up with a choon or melody that I never seem to develop into a complete song.
I started off singing in choirs at school and then with a big City choir, with this choir , I had the opportunity to sing in the Royal Albert Hall. I also recorded songs in a studio , recorded a TV programme and sang live on Radio.
Towards the end of my time with the choir , I started to learn to play guitar and I practiced with friends in garages / halls ect...I progressed to playing small gigs at school and jamming with friends that were playing in bands locally. Somewhere in the middle of this I actually took some guitar lessons.
But I left home to come to Surrey to start my nurse training and was reduced to stumming an acoustic guitar in my room with the main aim of impressing the girls with my awesome skills. But a few years in I met a couple of guys who played and wanted to form a band. We advertised , checked out and found a lead guitarist and formed a band. We played together over a 4/6 month period , got a set together and had the opportunity to support a well established local band. They came to see us , loved us and offered us a decent gig supporting them. The night before the gig , our drummer busted his hand fighting over a women, and we couldn't do the gig. This situation caused some in band arguments and led to us splitting due to musical differences...Oh well , the trials and tribulations of a Rock Lifestyle !!!
I will listen to most music as long as it is decent. Although I believe that the love of music is either in you or not , and that music is about feeling , soul , passion , energy ect...I have definate views about the quality of music.
Look , any idiot can write and perform a song. Anybody who can play a few chords can write a slightly better accomplished song than the idiot that can't play...but that does not make the song decent. A song has to connect with the listener in a way that it evokes some form of reaction , and have some sort of meaning , that 'special something' that makes the listener want to hear that song again and again.
Although I know that having musical talent , and good songs is not necessarily a recipe for success , as talented musicians crash & burn everyday ...I would like to think that true talent will always prevail eventually. But the sad truth about the music industry today is that image is a massive factor , ok , I know that image has always been an important issue in the music industry, but nowadays artist can become successful on image alone , with only a tiny morsel of talent. Of course artists also need good breaks , backing and promotion to do well. That is why I wholly support what James is doing with SicPuppy Records. SicPuppy Records provides a platform for young , up & coming bands , with talent to showcase and promote their music.
